Caput Mundi

The Latin expression caput mundi, referring to the city of Rome, means “capital of the world“, and is related to the great extent reached by the Roman Empire such that – according to the point of view of imperial historians – the Capitoline city became the crossroads of all global political, economic and cultural activity.

Rome is one of the most iconic cities in the world and its importance in the history of humanity cannot be overstated. It has been the seat of power of many empires including the Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Italy and the Papal States. Rome is known for its rich cultural and architectural heritage, as well as its political and religious significance.

But why is called the “eternal city”? The poet Tibullus is credited by many scholars as the first to refer to Rome as “Urbs Aeterna,” which translates from Latin to the “Eternal City.”

Rome was founded in 753 BC by the legendary Romulus and Remus, twin sons of the war god Mars and a she-wolf. Since then, Rome has been the center of power for various civilizations including the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire and the Papal States. It has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Church since the 4th century and is one of the most important cultural, religious and political centers in the world. The city of Rome is filled with magnificent monuments, archaeological sites and art. The most famous sights include the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Forum Romanum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and St. Peter’s Basilica. These landmarks are some of the most visited tourist attractions in the world and are symbolic of the city’s rich history. Rome is also home to many educational institutions, from the prestigious Sapienza University of Rome to the American University of Rome.
